Designed by Donald Steel making the best use of the natural lie of the land and protecting the ecology, this is one of the best maintained courses on the Algarve. Since its opening in 1991 Vila Sol has hosted the Portuguese Open and is ranked amongst Europe's best. It now has 27 holes.
The opening par 4 makes for a tricky start, with a tall pine tree impairing the line to the green. The green itself is fast and humped. The par 5 6th creates quite a challenge with a lake cutting into the centre of the fairway requiring a second shot across the water. Take the ‘safe' route and you could be in the bunker.
The second nine introduces more challenges with a difficult par 5 14th. A lake protects a sloping, two tiered green which is then protected by overhanging trees. Golfers are faced with a blind drive from the 18th tee. Land too far to the left and you will have to take a shot to the green over trees.
The third nine starts with a narrow fairway while the par 4 27th is a dog-leg left with two lakes running alongside and a huge green.
