If it is a taste of 'real' Portugal you are after, rather than the more developed areas of the Algarve, we would definitely recommend Tavira in the Eastern Algarve and close to the border with Spain as the place for you.

Proving to be very popular, the smart and great value Hotel Vila Gale Tavira is centrally positioned in this traditional and unspoilt town and is close to the fishing harbour and the indoor market which is well worth a visit for its great range of local produce. It is only a short walk to the local bars and restaurants where you will be able to sample traditional Portuguese cuisine with delicious, locally caught fish on most menus.

One of the best beaches along this stretch of coast, a long sand spit called Ilha do Tavira, is accessible via a short ferry ride from the end of the jetty and the nearby fishing village of Cabanas is a waterfront treat where the inexpensive bars and restaurants offer fresh seafood.

Tavira is very conveniently located to take advantage of the great value and excellent courses of Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima as well as Benamor and Castro Marim. Several other good quality and value Portuguese and Spanish golf courses are within easy driving distance. No wonder it is so popular!
