Gran Canaria benefits from year round moderate temperatures ensuring that golfers can enjoy a game at any time of the year. Whilst the winter months are the most popular for visitors, the summer months are quieter and the temperatures not too high for a pleasant round.
The island now boasts six great 18 hole golf courses with more on the way. Most are at the southern end of the island. Spain’s first ever golf course, Real Club de Golf de las Palmas, was built here and lies next to an ancient volcano. It is a short course with narrow fairways, small greens and deep ravines and well worth playing with its spectacular views. The Golf Hotel Bandama is situated right next door to the course and is perfect for those of you who like to be able to step right out onto the golf course from your hotel.
Maspalomas Golf course is an unusual course to play and very different from Real Club de Golf. It is long and flat and surrounded by sand dunes, with soft breezes coming in off the sea. Anfi Tauro Golf is the latest course to be built and has been designed in the style of an Arizona course offering spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean.
Tenerife is an island of dramatic contrasts from the arid, desert-like South to the lush, green North with the extinct Mount Teide volcano at its centre. And there are great golf courses to play at either end! The black sand bunkers might come as quite a surprise due to the volcanic rock, but at least a white golf ball will be easily visible!
At the southern end of Tenerife the 27 hole course of Golf del Sur is perhaps the best known and the closest to the airport. In fact you could be playing golf within an hour of landing! Amarilla Golf is almost next door. Golf las Americas, located in a gently sloping ampi-theatre overlooking the town and coastline, is a delight to play and you can visit the popular Playa de las Americas for entertainment at the end of the day. Costa Adeje is a must on any golfer’s visit to Tenerife. The course is set with the walls of a former banana plantation and provides stunning views along the south of the island.
The Real Club de Golfe Tenerife is situated in the north and is the oldest course in Tenerife. It has quite an English feel to it with its rolling fairways and a buggy is definitely recommended here! Buenavista Golf is the newest course to be opened. Designed by Seve Ballasteros it provides a good test of golf for all levels of player. Enjoy the back nine, closest to the sea, where you often appear to be taking a shot straight into the sea itself!
