Having just returned from a great short break at the 5 star El Rompido Golf Hotel on the Costa de la Luz, I thought I would write and let you know how we got on. It is just perfect for a short break as there are plenty of flights into Faro and it took less than an hour on the motorway and over the border into Spain to get to the resort - although you do have to bear in mind that Portugal runs on the same time as us while Spain is an hour ahead!
El Rompido has got two 18 hole courses now and we played both. I enjoyed the South course best with its views over the sea although the first nine were a bit tricky. My better half preferred the new North course - probably because he played better than he has for a while!
The hotel itself was very smart and stylish, but comfortably golfy! We had a great room overlooking the pool and the sea with a huge double bed and a very nice bathroom with a separate shower. We ate in the restaurant on two nights and enjoyed their excellent buffet which offered a huge choice of hot and cold food as well as show-cooking. The service was very good as it was throughout the hotel.
We wanted to take a walk from the hotel to the village, but the footpath was rather muddy from the overnight rain. We were told that it takes about 20 minutes. So we took the car (which took about 3 minutes!) and explored the delightful fishing village of El Rompido. It is very pretty with loads of bars and restaurants and many of them were open even though it was the quiet period. We had a very good seafood lunch followed by a walk along the promenade and the superb beach!
All in all, a very good break and somewhere we would definitely go to again.
